359 - Winter in the Park
I didn’t plan on using “Winter” in the name of two pieces in a row, however, earlier this evening we went to a Kansas City tradition for the last 37 years, Winter In The Park, which is a drive-thru nighttime display of strings of lights set to animate in various entertaining ways from frogs catching snowflakes on enormous outstretched tongues to a patio-daddy-o Santa smoking meats on an outdoor grill, and numerous other variations on holiday absurdities crudely yet effectively animated. It’s worth the wait in line.
Sadly, our driver unfairly got in line in front of somebody important, so they felt compelled to continue to remind us of their importance via the occasional honk or headlight flash. Since we beat ‘em to the display punch possibly a full 10 seconds in advance no wonder they were so aggrieved.
To atone for yesterday’s lydian/mixolydian mess (also oddly enough referred to as the acoustic scale) today’s piece is in C. As the order of tone center and modality of these pieces are in a set order, Christmas Eve’s piece will be in Eb minor and Christmas Day in G (unless I repost something instead).
Note: I wasn’t thinking that since I compose these a day in advance, tomorrow’s tune, which I’m just about to start composing, will actually be in Eb minor and tomorrow I’ll be working in G major, and that one will show up the day after Christmas, in time for Mark’s birthday!
