Hot & Hazy
I’m not a fan of hot weather but I’m also a bit confused as to why here in the midwest when it gets into the mid 90’s it’s time for an extreme heat warning. I’ve always felt that 90’s aren’t all that extreme - the 100’s, now that’s extreme.
Anyway, when it’s hot like this we try to avoid cooking indoors heating the house any more than necessary and nothing has come in handier than our solar oven.
It kind of looks like this, except it’s home made, not a commercial unit (thought I had a picture of it handy but I didn’t):
It’s a vacuum Tube with a reflector around it and a long metal trough one can fill with food to slide in the tube. On a sunny day it can get over 450°F inside, more than hot enough to literally grill meat.
It’s not been sunny though, it’s been hazy. It made no different, I put it to the test and it did a fine job baking potatoes and roasting brats in the cloudy haze, so I’m happy.
