The Nelson Art Gallery here in Kansas City currently houses an Alphonse Mucha exhibition.
If you’re not familiar with this artist his singular style and famous lithographs were, and continue to be, the inspiration for countless record covers and concert posters.
A couple of days ago we attended the exhibition with our friends from out of town. They loved it. It was quite an experience and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Kansas City.
My friend Denis, whom I’ve known since I was a teenager but unfortunately died a few years ago, was an enormous Mucha Fan. As we strolled about the exhibit I couldn’t help but think, repeatedly, how Denis would’ve loved this.
Wait, there’s more!
Todays piece was actually totally hand drawn in ink, including the staff lines, in my small journal book instead of the large music book. I’d just purchased a dip pen that draws five parallel staff lines so tried it out.
When I first drew some crude lines I slapped some equally crude notes down to see how well it worked.
Looking at the notes later I thought, what the hell, that’s not half bad, so I just finished it off.

The Mucha exhibit was here in Santa Fe last year at this time, and it was a great reminder of how much influence he had even though most people don't know his name. Good on you for your tributes to your friend Denis. 👏🏼
