I really cannot remember a time in my life where current events have coalesced into a perfect storm of anxiety and dread to the extent they have this election cycle.
In the past it’s typically been one candidate somewhat centrist or a little left of center against another one a bit right of center, which is why it seem like over my lifetime things have not changed all that much.
Such is not the case this year. We have one candidate pretty much a little left of center against one that is utterly off the charts statistics-wise, by at least one standard deviation point beyond the norm in just about every category one can come up with. In layman’s terms, one standard deviation point means only about 1.4% of the sample or population shares the same characteristics. Think of the tail ends of a bell curve, that’s where they lie.
It used to be if a person was one standard deviation from the norm in pretty much any category, they were unelectable. Adlai Stevenson is a good example, both bald and a MENSA genius the main criticism leveled against him is “we don’t want no eggheads running the show,” when in fact, that’s exactly the kind of person you want in the Oval Office.
Allan Lichtman and his keys are predicting the White House will not change parties, but what does that matter when you are up against a candidate that has such standard deviation issues? One that wreaked all kinds of havoc four years ago and is broadcasting the intent to do it all over again?
I am of the opinion if somehow the winner of the 2024 election does not end up being the same person sworn in on Jan 20, 2025, the civil disobedience will be off the charts and we’ll be lucky to come out the other end with a country that’s still intact.
Times are indeed rancid.
