Don’t let the cheerful nature of that little ditty below mislead you - I’m not in the best of humors.
I’ve made it a point to avoid politics on this sort-of blog. All one accomplishes by discussing much of anything political these days is pissing off a portion of their potential audience. Also, melodies alone aren’t very political, though put words to them and they can become quite powerful, so says Woody Guthrie anyway.
But what’s got me fed up isn’t one party or the other (well, I’m fed up with them too but that’s not the point here), it’s the way decades go by, one party gets in power, then the other, back and forth, yet nothing really changes, things just seem to keep getting worse. Well, to be honest, little things change but, for example, year after year for as long as I’ve lived we’ve continued to throw obscene amounts of money into our military despite being essentially impossible to invade, surrounded as we are by two major oceans plus friends to our north and south. The waste of resources is mind-boggling.
Thrown into the mix is how much we hate and fight amongst ourselves over it all, almost exclusively because of rampant partisan tribalism. Hell, our politicians encourage it to keep themselves in their cushy jobs. People will literally vote to shoot themselves in the foot before voting to better their situation if they think it will give the other “tribe” a “win.”
So the upshot is nothing changes. It’s like one of the most elaborate good cop / bad cop routines in history.
It’s gotten so bad now overt crimes and frauds so obvious and illegal they hit you over the head like a hammer are brazenly committed because the perps know their misdeeds will be ignored and excused and protected by their “party” and media enablers over the flimsiest of excuses, and at the same time, misdemeanors so pissant they don't deserve a 2nd glance are inflated obscenely and thrown in our faces 24/7 as if they are the most outrageous of felonies.
And don’t get me started on how many of our so called leaders are certifiably dumber than a bag of hammers, yet we elect these morons, and they pass laws, and we get what we deserve because of it.
Talk about stupidity, even my spell checker didn’t know pissant was a real word and kept trying to get me to change it!
No wonder we’re so messed up.
When I graduated high school in 1972 if you’d told me then the world would be like it is now when I was approaching the goal post, I wouldn’t’ve believed you, yet here we are.
And the really sad part is, it seems to be getting worse!
If you wondered why my Waltz for the New Year was so gloomy, wonder no more.
Please accept my apology for this miserable rant. Now that I’ve got that out of my system we’ll be back to our regular show tomorrow.

Politics used to be better. Party for the rich, and the things they thought were best. Party for the poor, including trees, children, the aged. Party for those neither rich nor poor, workers who survive, angry they are paying the most taxes.
Now? The party for the rich has changed to something very scary.
I'm reading Neil Postman's book Amusing Ourselves to Death. The PDF is only 4mb if you would like to check it out. He contends that the Media, television primarily, has shifted the whole world we used to live in.
