Lately I’ve been wondering, why in the hell am I still doing this every day?
It’s not like I can’t stop.
Or is it?
I didn’t watch it, but a youTube video flashed past my scroll today titled “The Future of Music is Noise” subtitled “Whatever happened to melody?,” and it’s true. I’ve noticed for some time now in both popular and serious contemporary music, melody is seldom emphasized in favor of noise, tone color, texture and rhythm. If someone dares to write a melody it’s considered “quaint” and when they appear they’re typically limited to a few notes in a narrow range, perpetually riffing off John Lennon’s I Am The Walrus two notes over and over.
So what am I doing mucking around here with tunes on tunes piled on more tunes?
If it gives you joy, or a sense of accomplishment - however large or small, that's why. If others garner some pleasure out of the efforts, that's just icing on the cake.
Your remarks about melody going out of fashion reminds me of how representation went out of fashion in visual art. What it says about the modern period, I’m not sure, but nothing positive.
