144 - Beauty in Mediocrity
I kind of screwed up. I’ve been trying to reserve the weekends for posting tunes from previous years but this is a new one.
My favorite George Harrison album is the soundtrack he did for the movie Wonderwall. (Wonderwall Music), an obscure movie from 1968 few have seen.
I finally saw it tonight. I wouldn’t call it the worst movie I have ever seen, far from it, but it’s definitely mediocre and forgettable. So much so that it’s a marvel Harrison agreed to do the soundtrack and even more remarkable he produced music so singularly different from all his other music.
The plot revolves around a nerdy scientist that discovers a hole in his apartment wall that allows him to spy on his sexy female neighbor, so he does. That’s pretty much it. We are treated to endless shots of him peeping thru the hole while she entertains various guests. Despite a scant handful of nudity it’s mostly harmless & inoffensive, and boring and pointless.
If it wasn’t for the soundtrack I wouldn’t recommend watching it.
I discovering the soundtrack album barely scratched the surface of all the music he produced for the movie. There was a considerable amount of material that could’ve gone onto the soundtrack album but didn’t, and much of the music I was familiar with was alternative versions.
It’s a movie to be listened to, not watched. Though Harrison’s music appears in many other movies, as far as I can tell this the only one he scored himself. I wish he’d produced more soundtracks instead of just this one.
