The silver maple tree in our front yard has taken a lot of abuse over the last 26 years since it was planted. It was already here when we moved in but was only a couple of years old.
About a week ago it started creaking like a haunted house door effect. Turns out one of the big branches up high split and was leaning against another one, rubbing on it in the wind, making the creaking noise and also threatening to take out more branches when it finally comes down. I attempted taking it out myself but It was more than I could handle with my saw-on-a-stick so we called a tree service, then another, because they were all telling us the tree should be removed because, not only has it this one split which necessitates taking out both sides where it’s split, but another main branch up high is rotting and the entire tree is showing signs of imminent death.
So tomorrow they’re taking it out. Not really happy about this because we’re kind of used to it, plus, I’m not a big fan of killing trees, plus, it’s costly, but at least I’ll get some good firewood out of it and it’ll give us a chance to put a really spectacularly nice tree in our yard, like a ginkgo, perhaps.
It was so good. It went by too fast!
