067 - Close Call
Day before yesterday I updated my Ableton Live to the latest version (12).
When installed it said I needed to update several “Packs,” collections of samples, grooves, and other such enhancements. So I selected all of them to download. There were a lot of them.
Once downloaded I tried to install them all at once. After not too much time this caused Ableton to freeze. I had to force quit it.
This caused an avalanche of misadventures too convoluted to go into here but the result was nearly 300G of free space on my hard drive was filled, leaving 16G free, which was not enough, apparently, for anything to work, including saving my easyABC files that were open.
Somewhat concerned the program wasn’t saving properly, I highlighted the code and wrote them to text files, which also wouldn’t save! Attempting to save them to my external back up disk I was told I don’t have sufficient permission to save to this disk - aargh!
Luckily, I knew how to give myself permission so I saved those two text files to the external disk.
And it’s a lucky thing I did too because my failed attempts to save them earlier when the drive was full resulted in blank files overwriting my originals! I would’ve been able to recover them via Time Machine backups but I also would’ve lost everything I’d done the last couple of days, including yesterday and today’s post.
I really dislike doing the same thing twice so that was a close call.
