011 - Blue Plums
I enjoy using synthetic scales which I consider to be alternative diatonic layouts that do not fit into one of the seven standard modes. In this instance the F# normally used for the key of G is removed and a C# is inserted, resulting in a hybrid combination of lydian and mixolydian. Preparing today’s post I found a link discussing this hybrid mode, labeling it the “acoustic scale.”
We have a plum tree in our backyard. For the first time since we planted it it’s absolutely dripping to the ground with plums and so far the Japanese beetles haven’t stripped the leaves either. Right now the plums are a bright blue color. Eventually they’ll ripen into a dark purple but right now it’s a colorful sight.
